YouTuber Hicham Jerando has received a second court ruling against him in under two weeks, as Quebec’s Superior Court sentenced him on Thursday, 24 July, to 30 days in prison, 150 hours of community service, and a fine of 10,000 Canadian dollars. The verdict follows an earlier ruling for aggravated defamation against a Moroccan lawyer.
A new legal ruling: jail time and public service imposed
On 24 July, Quebec’s Superior Court found Moroccan YouTuber Hicham Jerando guilty in a second defamation case. He was sentenced to 30 days of imprisonment, 150 hours of community service, and a fine of CAD 10,000. The case was filed by Moroccan judge Abderrahim Hanine, who accused Jerando of defaming him in a series of videos published on the "Tahadi" YouTube channel. This judgement came just ten days after another court found Jerando liable in a separate civil case.

The new criminal verdict follows a prior civil judgement handed down by the same court just ten days earlier. In that case, Casablanca-based lawyer Adil Said Lamtiri sued Jerando for defamation over false and damaging statements made online. The court awarded CAD 164,514 in moral, financial, and punitive damages, and issued a permanent injunction requiring Jerando to stop all defamatory publications immediately.
A controversial figure: provocation, legal defiance and media pressure
Hicham Jerando, based in Montreal, has become known for his controversial and provocative content targeting Moroccan judges, lawyers and public figures. His videos, often accusatory in tone, have led to multiple lawsuits both in Morocco and Canada. In May, Jerando was sentenced in absentia by Moroccan courts to 15 years in prison for terrorism-related charges, including forming a criminal group, defamation, and inciting violence.
Despite court rulings, Jerando has continued to post content and denounce legal procedures. Moroccan associations in Canada have called out his defiance and warned of reputational damage to the diaspora.

Between freedom of expression and targeted defamation
These consecutive rulings send a clear message from Canadian courts: freedom of speech does not exempt individuals from legal consequences when false or malicious content causes harm. Jerando’s defence—based on freedom of expression—was overruled, with judges determining his actions amounted to aggravated and targeted harassment.
The imposed sanctions—prison, public service, financial penalty, and content takedown—are designed as both punishment and deterrent.
The case underlines a broader challenge in the digital age: when influencers publish internationally but cause reputational harm locally, whose jurisdiction prevails? Canadian law, in this case, has responded firmly.
Outlook: what next for Jerando and legal standards in digital media?
The sentence raises important questions for online content creators. Jerando must now comply with Canadian court orders: remove defamatory content, pay the fine, and avoid repeating the offence. Failure to do so could result in additional legal action.
For platforms like YouTube, the case highlights the tension between content hosting and responsibility. Should content flagged by courts remain accessible? And how should platforms act across jurisdictions?
Jerando’s case may serve as a precedent for international cooperation against digital defamation—signalling that being online does not mean being above the law.
